What are the LASIK procedures?

LASIK is a permanent surgical correction method to treat myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, based on corneal layer separation. Two different methods can be used to create a flap in the superficial layer of the cornea. The ophthalmologist can indeed create the flap either thanks to a laser equipment (Femto LASIK procedure), or with a precision instrument (LASIK). In both treatments, the flap is lifted the inner layer of the cornea is modified with another laser machine (Excimer laser). Then the flap is placed back in its original position.

What is the difference between LASIK and PRK procedures?

LASIK procedures (Blade or Femto) are the first techniques of laser corrective surgery based on cornea separation (creation of a flap). PRK, previous generation’s treatment yet still very popular, is based on a peeling technique of the cornea.

What is ReLEx SMILE procedure?

ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the ultimate laser procedure for the treatment of refractive issues. This minimally invasive treatment doesn’t require any flap creation, as the ophthalmologist only uses a laser equipment to create a lenticule inside the cornea, which will be removed via a small incision (3/4 mm) done with laser technique as well. The strength of the cornea’s structure is thus fully preserved.

Is LASIK surgery suitable with thin cornea?

For any LASIK procedure, the thickness of cornea must be at least 480 microns, otherwise the ophthalmologist will propose alternative treatments for short-sightedness.  Thus, Implantable Contact Lens, or ICL, can be recommended in case of very short-sighted vision and thin cornea. This 10/15 minutes surgical procedure provides excellent postoperative results.  Please contact us for any additional information.

Can I be candidate for LASIK surgery ? (Age and other factors)

Besides the age, some other factors will condition suitability of any LASIK treatment. The general conditions of eyes (no eye disease), the thickness of the cornea, but also the general health condition will be evaluated by our ophthalmologist before declaring any patient as candidate for surgery. In particular for women, LASIK surgery cannot be undergone during pregnancy nor breastfeeding.

Main Advantages of LASIK

     1. LASIK treatments are permanent treatments for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism

     2. Post-operative recovery time is short and doesn’t require any overnight at LASIK centre

     3. Discomfort during surgery is negligible. Surgery doesn’t require injection for anesthesia, but only anesthetic drops.

     4. Quality of vision is back to full efficiency quickly.

5.On a long-term, LASIK surgery represents cost savings (glasses, contact lenses not needed anymore).

Side effects of LASIK
Some normal side effects may arise after LASIK procedure. Occurrence and duration depend on each patient and on every type of procedure. Most common side effects can be :

     1. Dry eyes, reduced by artificial water drops

     2. Red eyes from broken blood vessels, which is mild and gradually decreases within 2 weeks

     3. Bright light perception at night, which gradually improves within 1 month.

How to choose a LASIK Centre?

Because of the extreme importance of eyes and vision in daily life, the selection of a LASIK centre must be based on very strong criteria:

     1. Centre operated under safety standards (certified by the Ministry of Public Health)

     2. Experienced and specialized ophthalmologists in the field of correction of corneal dysfunction and refraction issues, driven by a strong ethical approach.

     3. Modern equipment, in particular laser equipment, to offer the most appropriate and recent procedures, such as ReLEx SMILE.

     4. Trained and experienced staff to provide all needed information and assistance, before, during and after surgery.
